I have a 5 speed civic and latley it dosen't want to go into frist. When you go to push it in it feels like the shitfer is in but when you let the clutch out you realize it's not in and you have to push and pull it a few times before it goes in. My shifter has a lot of side to side play in it. I was wondering if the excessive amount of play in the shifter has something to do with this ?

sounds to me like something is getting worn out. if the shifter doesn't want to go into first, try to rev it up a bit and then it'll slide in. but if you have a LOT of side play with the shifter WHILE it's in gear, you might wanna get it all checked out...eheck out all of your linkage at the least, and if that checks out okay, it might be that you've got a pretty worn tranny.

I checked the linkage out and there's a lot of play where the linkage meets up with the rod that comes out of the tranny. I think that may be my problem. When it is in gear i can push the shifter all teh way to each side. I think i will order a energy suspension shift stablizer kit, it's only like $11. Oh my car only has like 196,000 KM so it's like 130,000 or so miles, so i don't think it could be the tranny but..

yup, and dude, at the base of the shifter there is a bolt that goes straight through, connecting the shifter, linkage, and stabilizers together. sounds like that sucka is loose, so tighter her back up. es bushing kit is cheap and helps, so pick that up too..it's all really easy once you get under there and look at it.

You may want to consider a short shifter while you are at it. I bought the Energy Suspension bushing kit and a crappy OBX short shifter ($30?) and I love it. If you are going thru the hassle of the bushing kit, the short shifter is the next logical upgrade since you are already under there IMO

excellent idea! might i recommend DC and neuspeed as well? the OBX does the trick too..

anybody know of a good short shifter that actually reduces shift without just being lower? i don't like hunching over to shift. i also need the linkage to clear my exhaust. if i wanted a shifter that was just shorter, i would just cut my stock one in half

I ordered the energy suspension bushing from summit the other day and i'm goin to find a short shifter and install it and let you know if the bushings take the play out. Oh they were about $20.00.
